space4art intervention is a new exhibition series by the art associations 701 and Düsseldorf-Palermo in cooperation with HPP Architekten. It is designed for the publicly accessible and unroofed inner courtyard of the new HPP workspace in Düsseldorf's Medienhafen, which will in future provide a venue for cultural activities and exhibitions. The artistic positions shown are intended as deliberate interventions and are developed specifically for the location.

To kick things off, Kunstverein 701 is showing Unpredictable Liars Revolt, a sculptural outdoor installation by the artist Isabella Fürnkäs, born in Tokyo in 1988, which populates the inner courtyard with numerous enigmatically veiled figures.

The ensemble of figures is part of a complex of works that Fürnkäs has continuously developed in recent years and varied depending on the exhibition context. The figures’ conspicuously draped fabrics reveal the artist’s preoccupation with Japanese ‘Noh theatre’. The installation is complemented by a sound collage of a wide variety of sung, whispered or spoken text passages, which, as a ‘stream of consciousness’, invites direct sensory experience and negotiates questions of role play, isolation, interpersonal communication and social co-existence.

Isabella Fürnkäs studied as a master student with Andreas Gursky at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf, with Hito Steyerl at the Universität der Künste Berlin and with Gunter Damisch at the Akademie der bildenden Künste Wien.
